Robert Wilhelm Bunsen

(1811-99)

Robert Wilhelm Bunsen was a German scientist who made popular the gas heating device that has his name, the Bunsen burner. An Englishman named Faraday actually invented the burner, but Bunsen made many improvements to it. He also invented the zinc-carbon electric cell and performed valuable research on how to use waste gases from blast furnaces. (See also: Faraday)
