Call Before You Dig

Before you begin any diggingthat could be near underground power lines, you must call 811 (or for Hawaii, 1-866-423-7287 toll-free) to locate the lines and provide at least 48 hours notice. Doing so isn't only smart policy; it's the law. When you call, the national call center will route the work to your local One Call Center to come mark the lines.

Calling before you begin work ensures that the underground lines will be marked so that you can work around them safely. Marking the lines prevents personal injuries that could result if an underground line is broken.

Following four simple steps can prevent an interruption of service or a potentially hazardous situation.

  1. Call 811 Before You Dig
  2. Wait the Required Amount of Time for Lines to be Marked
  3. Respect the Locator's Marks
  4. Dig with Care

Failure to call before digging can result in loss of service for numerous homes and buisnesses, repair costs, fines and injury or loss of life.

Calling 811 before you dig applies to jobs big and small. Even something simple as planting a tree or shrub, installing a mailbox on a post, or building a fence or deck.

Homeowners should have buried utility lines marked before digging to plant trees or shrubs.

Call 811 to have underground utility lines marked before you dig to protect yourself from injury and exposure to liability. The best part is it's FREE!
